Engine Maintenance Challenges Explained

Release date: 2024 October 17

The aviation industry is on the rise again, but turbulence lurks beneath the sunny skies. A surge in demand for air travel is colliding with a complex web of supply chain challenges, creating a headache for airlines and maintenance providers. In a recent interview with AeroTime, led by Michale Jonga, Hanna Lavinskaja, Head of EngineStands.com, and Toma Matutytė, CEO of Locatory.com shed light on these pressing issues.

They delved into the factors contributing to the aviation supply chain strain, from the backlog of new aircraft to the critical shortage of parts and skilled labor. Yet their conversation wasn’t, of course, all about highlighting the problems. Matutytė and Lavinskaja explore the strategies airlines and maintenance organizations are adopting to navigate this challenging landscape. From diversifying suppliers to leveraging technology, they discuss the innovative solutions emerging to keep engines flying and passengers satisfied.

Both experts noted that operators and lessors alike are now truly striving to strike a balance: managing older engines while also planning for the future. Lavinskaja highlighted that the market for spare engines and leasing solutions is thriving, bridging the gap between downtime and urgency. “MROs are warning that costs may rise due to challenges in accessing materials,” she remarked, pointing to a harsh reality: the shortages that troubled the early days of the pandemic have not vanished; they have merely evolved, introducing new hurdles for airlines and maintenance providers.

Nonetheless, she remains optimistic about innovative leasing solutions that help airlines bypass long delays. By renting spare engines during maintenance periods, airlines can avoid prolonged groundings and maintain operations. “It’s about achieving that balance, helping clients stay adaptable in an ever-changing environment,” she concluded.
